Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. Acts 5:29
Dear Praying Friends,
Had he lived, Ronald Reagan would have been 101 this week. Last week Professor Paul Kengor lectured at FRC. In his book, God and Reagan, he wrote of Reagan’s conviction for the need of God-sent revival:
It was during his governorship that Reagan’s mind first began to turn seriously toward the idea that America needed a religious revival-a spiritual awakening. “I think our nation and the world needs a spiritual revival as it has never been needed before” he argued… [His comments] weren’t mere public attempts to appeal to religious conservative voters… they appear more often in Reagan’s private letters to everyday citizens than in his public speeches…: To a commissioner…”What we need is a spiritual awakening and return to the morals of a Christian society.” To a…citizen: “I am deeply concerned with the wave of hedonism… this nation must have a spiritual rebirth… and …very soon.”… To [high school] seniors… “No nation which has outgrown…God has ever lived to write additional pages of history. This nation is in need of a spiritual reawakening…” Herb Ellingwood (Reagan friend and White House Deputy Counsel) overheard [Reagan’s] personal conversation[s] with [people – ministers, staff, and the public over many years]…privately, in letters to kids… to Pope Paul VI–“The time has come to turn back to God and reassert our trust in Him for the healing of America….”He often wrote of Jesus Christ in private correspondence with strangers, and he wasn’t shy about Christian apologetics, frequently making the case for Christ. In the 1970s, he asked an interviewer…”How can you write off the prophecies in the Old Testament that hundreds of years before the birth of Christ predicted every single facet of his life, his death, and that he was the Messiah?” [To a liberal minister who denied Christ’s deity, Reagan wrote] “Is there really any ambiguity in his words: “I am the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me?”… In John 10 he says, “I am in the Father and the Father in me.” And he makes reference to being with God, “before the world was,” and sitting on the “right hand of God.”… These and other statements he made about himself, foreclose in my opinion, any question as to his divinity.”
Our 40th President did not believe great leaders were our nation’s hope, rather Christ and sweeping Christian Awakening were our only hope “and soon.” He repeated this often throughout his public and private life. America is at a crossroads. We desperately need godly leaders, but even more desperately, we need a God-sent awakening. May we plead with Him for America in the small time window open to us.
The End of Religious Liberty, Obamacare – Last week, we prayed over the Obama administration’s announcement that ObamaCare contraceptive mandates will be required of all employers, essentially excepting only churches. One conservative congressman, asked supporters to pray and including the following:
Does health care trump religious freedom? It has become clear that the Obama administration plans to impose its requirement that all employers provide free contraceptives in their health care plans. Catholic institutions in particular are incensed at this unprecedented government intrusion. Although there is a religious exemption, it is so narrow that almost no institutions could comply. (Someone said even Jesus and His disciples wouldn’t fit the narrow definition!) All people of faith should be exercised over the Obama administrations heavy-handedness. First of all, it violates the First Amendment, with its freedom of religion protection. Secondly, some of the mandated free contraceptives include abortifacients, like Ella, which violate the right to life, also protected in our Constitution. All American employers will be providing abortions by government dictate. This is reprehensible. (see Six Things, Detroit Free Press, Daily Caller, Chicago Tribune, The Hill, Wall Street Journal, WSJ2, Washington Post)
- Please pray that this unconstitutional and life-destroying mandate never takes effect. Pray that Americans will elect a President in November who will respect religious freedom. Pray for God’s protection of all our god-fearing Congressmen and their families. May they be given God’s wisdom (per Jas 1:5). May God give Americans supernatural grace and wisdom in this primary election season! (Ex 18:21; 20:13; Jos 1:7; Acts 5:29; 23:1; 24:6; 1 Tim 4:2; 1 Pet 2:16-19; 2 Pet 2:18-19)
Religious Liberty and our Military – Recently, American war hero Lt. General William Boykin (USA, Ret.) was pressured to withdraw from speaking to Cadets at West Point about the importance of prayer in a leader’s life. But a handful of atheist and Muslim cadets complained about Boykin’s outspoken Christian beliefs. Now the Army Chief of Chaplains has ordered Catholic Army Chaplains not to read Archbishop Timothy Broglio’s letter urging all priests to speak out in opposition to the Obama Administration demand that church organizations comply with edicts that violate Church teaching and conscience. The Archbishop oversees the Catholic Church’s chaplain program. While 168 Catholic Bishops (90% of the total number across the nation) have spoken out, calling parish priests to do likewise, the Catholic faithful on military bases and in the field did not hear the letter from their Archbishop. The Chaplain Chief has authorized a “new version” (censored) to be read this weekend. Tony Perkins, himself a Marine, said this “shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s followed the seismic shifts in the military… [Chaplains] should consider the text of Acts 5:29 this coming weekend.” The Obama administration has been chipping away at religious liberty since its beginning. If this stands, religious liberty has been greatly diminished in America (see Plain as the No’s on Your Faith, Boykin, Blocked, Sign Petition).
- May these administration actions finally stir the outrage in all God-fearing Americans. May the sleeping giant of the Church, Catholic and Protestant, awaken to take a stand and begin to reverse the nationwide effort to silence God’s people! (Jdg 5:12 ff; Is 60:1-2; Dan 3:18; 6:7-20; 11:30b-35; Acts 5:29; 25:11; Eph 6:10-20)
Planned Parenthood – The victory for the Susan G. Komen Foundation was short lived in breaking away from the largest private and tax funded abortion business in America. Planned Parenthood’s activist machine so bludgeoned Komen that they agreed to reverse their stand. The Girl Scouts, whose leadership has been collaborating with Planned Parenthood for years, have found out and their cookie sales are suffering. This is very sensitive for the Scouts. The Scouts had better confess their errors and make a clean break while they can. Yet Planned Parenthood doesn’t let its captives go easily (see FRC Response, PP Attack, Hostages, Girl Scouts).
- May Congress expose and defund Planned Parenthood and may private organizations refuse to submit to shakedowns by Planned Parenthood and others in the abortion advocacy industry. May the Pro-life Majority grow in America until abortion has been abolished (Ex 23:2; Dt 21:1-9; 2 Kg 24:2-4Pr 20:11; 24:11-12; Mt 27:4-6; Eph 5:11-14).
Finally, FRC will be conducting a Regional Pastors Briefing in Nashville on February 16th and our “Watchmen on the Wall” National Briefing in Washington, DC May 23-25, 2012. Also, last week we sent you a bad link to Dr. Patrick Sookhdeo’s “Responding to Islam: Lessons from Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Karl Barth, and Bishop George Bell,” lecture. HERE is the correct one! Please urge your church and prayer groups to participate in the Collegiate Day of Prayer February 23! This is a day to pray for our Colleges and Universities. Breaking: the NY Senate passed a bill to allow churches to use public school buildings (pray the House will follow). Thank you for Praying!
