Dear Praying Friends,
We are now in the 39th year of life under the evil of Roe v. Wade, which has infected every sphere of American life and threatens worse. In 1983, the 10th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, President Ronald Regan, wrote Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation. His simple insights ring with truth and power then and now. Some excerpts:
Our nationwide policy of abortion-on-demand through all nine months of pregnancy was neither voted for by our people nor enacted by our legislators-not a single state had such unrestricted abortion… The consequences of this judicial decision are now obvious: since 1973, more than 15 million unborn children have had their lives snuffed out by legalized abortions…over ten times the number of Americans lost in all our nation’s wars [the number in 2012 has grown to 55 million]…
Make no mistake, abortion-on-demand is not a right granted by the Constitution. No serious scholar, including one disposed to agree with the Court’s result, has argued that the framers of the Constitution intended to create such a right…
Abortion concerns not just the unborn child; it concerns every one of us… We cannot diminish the value of one category of human life – the unborn – without diminishing the value of all human life…
[We] need to join in prayer to bring protection to the unborn. Prayer and action are needed to uphold the sanctity of human life… it will not be possible to accomplish our work, the work of saving lives, “without being a soul of prayer.” The famous British Member of Parliament, William Wilberforce, prayed with his small group of influential friends, the “Clapham Sect,” for decades to see an end to slavery in the British Empire… Let his faith and perseverance be our guide…
There is no cause more important for preserving… freedom than affirming the transcendent right to life of all human beings, the right without which no other rights have any meaning (Human Life Review, Spring, 1983)
While President Obama and some in Congress have worked hard to expand abortion and make taxpayers pay for it, American public opinion and the political environment have never been better for reversing Roe v. Wade and abortion on demand. If we prevail in prayer for pro-life candidates, November could mark the beginning of the end for abortion in America.
State of the Union – Religious Liberty or Abortion Tyranny? – The President took credit for glimmers of hope in our struggling economy, the measure by which many define the state of our nation, but President Reagan’s words in 1983 show the measure of our nation’s real health: freedom and respect for life. Last week President Obama took the anniversary of Roe v. Wade as a chance to recognize the “fundamental constitutional right” to abortion and to “continue our efforts to ensure that our daughters have the same rights, freedoms, and opportunities as our sons to fulfill their dreams…” Meanwhile HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced that under Obamacare, businesses and organizations that offer employees health insurance must cover sterilization, contraceptives and birth control devices and medicines, including Ella, the abortifacient “morning after pill.” Religious organizations will have until August 2013 “to adjust” to the new rules but only churches qualify for the narrow “religious exemption.” Businesses and other organizations, including religious non-profits (church affiliated schools, hospitals, and charities) must comply. Cardinal-Designate Timothy Dolan reacted, “In effect, the President is saying we have a year to figure out how to violate our consciences.” FRC’s Tony Perkins said, “This is the time to draw a line and take a stand…This is about the ability to live out your faith in public according to the teachings of your faith” (see Obama Speech, Trampling Religious Liberty, Contraceptive Mandate Defies Religious Freedom, Dolan).
•May God help Congress and the next President to overturn Obamacare, with its many unconstitutional provisions and it assault on Life. May the U.S. Supreme Court overturn the entire bill when it considers it this spring (Dt 30:19; Is 10:1; 58:12; 61:1-4; Lk 13:1-5; 18:1-8; Acts 3:17-19; 15:16-17).
NY City Pastors – The number of pastors and churches protesting the Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s eviction of churches that rent public school facilities for worship services is growing. On Sunday, January 29th at 3:30 PM, pastors from both conservative and liberal congregations are calling thousands of believers to a march across Brooklyn Bridge and on to City Hall Park, where they will be addressed by Councilmen, Pastors, and nationally known figures, including Rev. Al Sharpton. The U.S. Supreme Court elected not to hear the churches’ appeal that the City’s action violated the federal “Equal Access Law,” leaving them at the City’s mercy. Thirty-two members of the City Council are supporting a bill introduced by Councilman Fernando Cabrera to reverse the ruling; another bill, introduced in the state legislature to guarantee equal access to churches, has already passed the State Senate (see Worship Protests Intensify, State Senate).
•Other jurisdictions are watching. May God grant favor to the pastors and churches. May the Council and the legislature bills overrule Mayor Bloomberg and may the U.S. Supreme Court act soon to affirm and reinforce the Federal Equal Access law! (Num 22:5-6 ff; Ps 105:12-15; Pr 24:19-25; Eze 45:9; Dan 11:32-33; Mt 5:10; 1 Tim 4:12-16)
State Marriage Fights Intense – Unless God intervenes, Governor Chris Gregoire will succeed in her effort to legalize same-sex “marriage” in Washington State. Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen (D) announced Monday that she will support the bill, making her’s the 25th vote necessary for passage. “You are saying…you know better than God,” said Pastor Ken Hutcherson of the Antioch Bible Church. The House is expected to pass the measure easily. Meanwhile, pro-family advocates in New Jersey are pleading for prayer from across the nation. Same-sex “marriage” advocates at the State House in Trenton outnumber those defending traditional marriage. Thankfully, Governor Christie has promised to veto legislation, but the legislature may well pass it with a veto-proof majority. In Maryland, a citizen rally to protest the legalization of homosexual “marriage” will be held outside the State House the evening of January 30th; the Senate Hearing will be on the 31st. (Washington State, Maryland Marriage Alliance, New Jersey Family Policy Council, More States with Marriage Battles).
•May God strengthen and reinforce the pro-family groups that are leading the fights to preserve natural marriage and to prevent same-sex “marriage.” May the people of each state rally to support God-given marriage and may God give supernatural assistance where it is needed! (Jdg 4:14-15; 5:12-15a; Neh 6:9; Ps 110:3; Is 41:10; Mt 19:6; Mk 10:9)
Finally, FRC’s ProLifeCon, featuring the latest information on how to use the internet and social media to advance Life, was a tremendous success. You can view a video of the event HERE. Thank you for your prayers!
